An urgent product recall notice has been issued for Crayola toys, as anyone with the items has been strongly advised to stop using them immediately. The Office for Product Safety and Standards (OPSS) has warned that the products may contain asbestos.
Hunter Price’s Crayola-Branded Touchy Feely Craft Box and Hunter Price’s Crayola-Branded Discovery Craft Box have both been recalled. Both items present a risk to health, as sand contained within the kits may be contaminated with asbestos. The OPSS said: “The product presents a risk to health as the sand included in the kit may be contaminated with a small quantity of asbestos.
“Asbestos is a banned substance because it poses a risk to health even at low levels of exposure. The product does not meet the requirements of the Toys (Safety) Regulations 2011.”
The Touchy Feely Craft Box is described as a colourful box containing various craft items. It was stocked by retailers including Asda, Bargainmax, CJS Trade Limited, Cloud Nine Boutique Ltd, Geeantee Wholesale, Sainsbury’s, Scottish Midland Cooperative, and The Works, reports the Mirror.
The Discovery Craft Box, meanwhile, was available through retailers including Asda, BargainMax, CJS Trade Limited, Sainsbury’s, Scottish Midland Co-Operative, The Works, and Vape-Superstore Limited.
The OPSS added: “We recommend owners stop using this product immediately and keep it out of the reach of children.” Guidance on safe disposal has been provided for those in possession of the toys.
If the sand remains in its original packaging, place it inside a heavy-duty plastic bag, seal it thoroughly with double tape, label it clearly and store it somewhere secure and out of children’s reach.
If the sand has already been used, clean up sites where the product was used with wet cloths to avoid generating dust. Wear gloves and a mask throughout. Double bag the sand along with the gloves, mask and cloths.
The OPSS said: “Keep children and other people away from areas where the sand has been used until the area has been cleaned. Dispose of the product in your general household waste, or return to store where specified by the retailer, who will provide a full refund.”
Many of the retailers have issued their own recall notices for the products. Sainsbury’s said: “We are asking customers that have purchased the above products to stop using it immediately.”
The supermarket has advised customers to dispose of the product in general household waste before visiting a Sainsbury’s store with proof of purchase to claim a full refund.
Asda said: “If you have purchased Crayola Discovery Craft Box, stop using the product immediately and bring it back to your nearest store where you will be given a full refund.”
