Fans of WWII dramas can’t miss this film, which has received a slew of positive reviews from audiences. Anthropoid was released in 2016 and recounts Operation Anthropoid, the 1942 assassination of Reinhard Heydrich (played by Detlef Bothe) by exiled Czechoslovak soldiers Jozef Gabčík (Cillian Murphy) and Jan Kubiš (Jamie Dornan).
The movie followed the two soldiers as they were parachuted back into their occupied country and tried to take out the high-ranking Nazi, who was one of the architects of the Final Solution and even described by Adolf Hitler as “the man with the iron heart”. Anthropoid makes for tough viewing as it charts the brutality meted out by the Nazis against their enemies.
The movie boasted an all-star cast led by Peaky Blinders star Murphy and The Fall and 50 Shades actor Dornan.
Other cast members included Canadian Yves Saint Laurent star Charlotte Le Bon, Czech actress Anna Geislerová from Želary, Game of Thrones star Harry Lloyd, and Detectorists star Toby Jones, among others.
Anthropoid was nominated for 12 prestigious Czech Lion Awards, but sadly lost out to fellow WWII movie A Prominent Patient.
Many have praised Anthropoid on IMDb, and one person titled their 10/0 review: “Fantastic” and went on to say: “I found myself holding my breath on many occasions! A truly gripping finale, and I will definitely be watching this again.”
A second hailed it as an “awesome movie” in their top-tier review and said, “I cannot say enough about how great this movie was. If you haven’t watched it you must see it.”
A third person hailed the leads, Cillian Murphy and Jamie Dornan, for their performances and said that Anthropoid was based on an “extraordinary true story”.
The user elaborated: “This is a well-acted, informative movie that starts off as a slow burner, then the longer the film goes on, the more the tension gets ramped up.”
While a fourth audience member bestowed high praise, declaring it “The best cinematic account of this historic event.”
Yet another wrote: “One of the best II world war stories shown” and explained: “It was amazing how this true story has been told in each detail.”
They added: “Don’t miss it if you like war history.”
Someone else said in their 10/10 review: “Cillian Murphy and Jamie Dornan were superb! Highly recommend seeing it in theatres.”
