Mowing the lawn can be a big job, and with the sunny days becoming more and more frequent, it can feel like it needs doing all the time – but there are ways to slow down how fast your grass grows.
William Mitchel from Sutton Manor Nursery said: “A healthy lawn is really important, especially as summer is coming up. Your lawn is the main part of your garden, so it’s important to keep it healthy and looking good.”
Sutton and Tom Hilton, the director of National Greenhouse, shared their tips for keeping your lawn nice and green.
William said: “A good way to slow down how fast your grass grows is by leaving it a bit longer when you mow it.
“If you only cut a small amount of grass, it won’t damage the grass plant as much. This means it won’t need to repair itself as quickly.”

Don’t overwater
It’s important to water your grass properly, but if it’s growing too fast, you might be watering it too much.
Watering your lawn too often can make it grow faster, which means more mowing.
Tom said: “When the warmer seasons come, by not overwatering and fertilising, you can help the lawn go into a more restful state during dry weather.”
Cut down on fertilisers
Using less fertiliser can also be helpful – but it’s important to get the balance right.
William says: “Although using lawn fertilizer helps to give your grass that beautiful, full look it will also speed up the growth of the grass plant. This will again mean that more upkeep is needed to keep it looking healthy and intact.”
