The upcoming Barbie movie is one of the most anticipated movies of the year, and the excitement for the picture has become even more palpable following its recently released trailer. But during the movie’s shooting, Barbie star Margot Robbie was photographed by paparazzi in a neon leotard alongside Ryan Gosling, a set of photos that set the internet ablaze at the time. She has now confirmed how devastating these photos were to her once she saw them.
Robbie spoke about the photos while visiting The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, where she confirmed the photos were not part of a media blitz by the film’s promoters.
Instead, she confirmed they were caught off-guard by a crowd of onlookers while they were filming the Greta Gerwig-directed picture.
“I can’t tell you how mortified we were, by the way,” Robbie admitted. “We look like we’re like laughing and having fun, but dying on the inside. Dying.”
She went on to call it one of the worst times she’s experienced as an actor.
“I was like, ‘this is the most humiliating moment of my life,'” Robbie went on.
She also added that she “couldn’t believe” how many people arrived to watch her and Ken star Ryan Gosling play their doll characters in real life.
“There’s probably going to be a little crowd of people who are going to stand out,” she said. “Because, you know, we stand out a little in those outfits. So I knew there was going to be a little bit of attention, and probably some photos would get out there.”
“But not like it did!” she added. “It was like mad. It was like hundreds of people watching.”
It seems Robbie has been left surprised about the Barbie movie every step along the way.
The film was put into production back in 2009. Nine years later, in 2018, Robbie was reportedly in talks to star as the titular hero. A year later, in 2019, she was officially cast – but even then, she wasn’t sure it would make it to silver screens.
Robbie said: “The first time I read the Barbie script, my reaction was: ‘Ah! This is so good. What a shame it will never see the light of day, because they are never going to let us make this movie.'”
“But they did,” she beamed.
Robbie isn’t alone in the upcoming movie. Not only is she joined by the aforementioned Gosling as Ken, but also a collection of other actors and actresses taking on different versions of Barbie and Ken.
Kate McKinnon is joining Robbie, as well as Issa Rae, Hari Nef, Alexandra Shipp, Emma Mackey, Dua Lipa and Ritu Arya to name just a few.
Meanwhile, Shang-Chi star Simu Liu is another Ken, while the brand new Doctor Who star Ncuti Gatwa is another.
Barbie hits cinemas on July 21, 2023.
