The more texture, movement and body your hair has, the younger you’ll look. However, as you age, hair can become thinner due to a reduction in the production of sebum.
Luckily, there are plenty of ways to help keep hair looking full and in turn, look younger, according to Gustav Fouche, who owns two salons, with one located in Notting Hill, London.
The expert spoke exclusively to Express.co.uk to share his exclusive guide to looking younger by styling your hair.
1. Layering for volume
The expert recommended going for layered hairstyles to infuse the hair with “vitality and movement”. According to Gustav, this “instantly” creates a much more youthful look.
2. Ears
Gustav explained: “Showing your ears instantly opens your face, and you’ll rarely see a celebrity on the red carpet hiding their ears.
“What it does is open up the cheekbone area and open up the face, elongating the neck area. This is a simple yet very effective tool to make you look younger.”
3. Masterful colour mapping
The hair stylist recommended colour mapping which is where they add colour into a specific area for a specific result.
For example, if you have a few grey hairs, colour mapping out the white can help to maintain a younger look.
4. Highlights and lowlights
Gustav said: “By adding colour to strategic places, it is just like adding make-up to the face. Normally with make-up, when we do a dark colour, we soften, yet with hair colour it is the opposite.
“With dark colours we enhance, which can make the face look wider. If we want to make the face look narrower, we do lighter colours.
“We play with hair colour as you would with make-up to create a younger aesthetic.”
5. Trimming for strength
Regular trims are essential to maintain healthy ends at any age, but especially as you age to help preserve its vitality.
Make sure to book one every couple of months, especially if you use lots of heat on your hair.
Gustav performs unique 3D haircuts in his salon, cutting hair in its natural dry state to get the best result.
6. Volume boosting
It is also important to enrich the hair with good-quality shampoos, conditioners and elixirs to breathe life back into it.
Gustav has his own range of haircare which helps to cleanse the scalp and give nourishment and moisture to the hair, using all-natural products.
7. Guard against heat damage
Whilst it is ideal to stay away from heat altogether, this isn’t realistic, especially if you have overly frizzy or unmanageable hair.
Instead, shield your hair using specific products to protect it from the heat, which can also help to prevent dryness.
8. Face-framing
The hair stylist recommended choosing a haircut which frames the face, highlighting the best features and creating a “flattering silhouette”.
9. Scalp health
He added: “Nurture your scalp with regular cleaning to prevent oil and product build-up. By cleansing the scalp, it also promotes optimal follicle health, ensuring luscious and strong hair growth.”
10. Hydration is key
Water is key to creating healthy growth and hydrated hair so make sure to drink lots day-to-day.
As well as using all of the correct products, a homemade concoction of rice water can also help to keep the hair hydrated.
